If Paris is the place of style and fashion, UK must be the land of great designers. And Phoebe Philo clearly stated it Sunday at the Tennis Club de Paris during her Spring/Summer 17 Céline fashion show.
Now, the clothes themselves maybe aren’t exactly what we’ll wear next spring on a daily commute, but what comes out from this runway is more bound to real life than you could guess from a rapid glance.
There are layers: shirts on shirts and pants on pants, boxed pants over chiffon pants, half leather skirts over pants over another layer of pants, and stockings over the finally nude skin.
There are layers of color, in contrast. Mint on magenta, red on white, khaki on blue and white, pink, black and white plus ivory.
There are human-sized bags, white sneakers and enormous blazers. Adorable coats in bright hues, covered in little round and shiny studs, flowy dresses and mismatched shoes. The Céline fashion show is deep.
That’s why after various layers of clothes, all the layers of life come to visibility, together with the fact that – as stated in typewriter letters on the show invites – “[I want to show that] our bodies are bound to the world, whether we like it or not.”
Phoebe invited her teen daughter at the show and she wasn’t on FROW, but literally on the runway with a bunch of friends.
As any daughter would do at mom’s office, she was just leaning on a pillar with a pass around her neck as the models walked by on a real-life-bruise soundtrack, no trace of makeup.
Isn’t this us? Isn’t our life that we can peel as an onion, layer after layer?
All around the clock, seven days a week we try to be perfect, or at least the best version of ourselves. We need bigger bags, we want to stay comfy but fashionable, we are slaves to ourselves and our plans, we are everything and all in between, head to head with our imperfect and (sometimes) beautiful days .
Let’s forget about matching clothes and shoes then. Let’s embrace our exceptionally personal, yet mismatched and oh so layered life.
